Hi Robert... glad to see you made your way to the forums and posted.
I am not aware of any books, although I suspect there are some available and maybe someone can refer a good one for reading. In the meantime, while not a book and certainly not as detailed as a book might be, I wrote an article on the history of the church which touches on the first church and the divisions of the church, up through when denominationalism started, etc. It might be of some help to you. There are 6 parts to it... well, the first 6 posts in the thread.

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the LORD: "Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'
there is a little paperback book called "early christians speak" . you can probably pick it up pretty cheap. it is a compilation of writings from the first 3 centuries. and presents the "chain of events" that led to the catholic church as well as other sects such as montanism and the like. it is extremely interesting and revealing to read. aparently a bunch of little things that started in the first century led up to what would become the catholic church a couple hundred years later. in a way, the christians we read about in the bible were dealing with denominations already, like the gnostics and even some jewish christians that were "binding what had not been bound" anyway i strongly recommend the book.
on another note, if the denominational world would get a hold of these writings they would be astounded to see the emphasis on baptism for salvation in the early church (although the emphasis is just as strong in the bible they just cant see it )
Who is the author?
"My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him." 1 John 3:18-19

The Mattox book "The Eternal Kingdom" is a good read. I reference it a lot for Historical material.
