Romans 6:1-10 states that we are baptized into His death; this is the purpose of immersion, to be buried with Him. We are then dead to sin and raised up out of the water to walk in newness of life.

His blood is represented in the Lord's Supper where the bread symbolizes his body and the fruit of the vine represents his blood. Matthew 26:26-29.

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Tim 2:5 (U-NASB)

The connection of the Lord's blood and immersion in water is in His death (where His blood flowed), c.f. Zech. 13:1, Col. 2:12, Rom. 6:3. It would seem to be the spiritual contact with His blood at that point. No other NT ordinance is "unto the remission of sins".

also john 19:34 . it is in the water we come into contact with the blood. this event and scripture was no accident. another interesting tidbit is in 1 peter 3:20 where we see 8 souls saved through water (noah and his family ) and the rest of the world condemned by it. of course God promised never again to destroy the earth with water. i believe his plan was to one day save the world through this very water. it may very well be that it is still water that will save or condemn. (of course not the actual water ) please read through the scripture in 1 peter. great question by the way

One must take care in the number of conclusions reached with regard to the relationships suggested. Ultimately we are confident of hope of life after the grave given by the power that lies in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the "good news" (gospel), Rom. 1:16, 1 Cor. 15:1-4, 2 Tim. 1:9-10.

What did the water represent to Jesus other than water? When he was baptized?

Re: Does the water in baptism sybolize Jesus' Blood???

i have been told that the baptism of jesus is unique. (jesus is the only one to ever recieve this baptism) the closest equivalent would be the washing of sacrificial animals in the old testement before their sacrifice. someone else with a lot more knowledge than me i am sure will chime in. the idea is that jesus being the sacrificial lamb must be washed before the sacrifice . others would say that jesus was leading by example (which is also true) but i believe that jesus being perfect still had to be baptized and so must we.

on a side note. wouldnt that be interesting if that were also part of God's plan ( for us who are to become living sacrifices also be washed in a similar fashion ) of course i am just thinking out loud on this one.

    great question by the way

Scholars have suggested that the laver in the temple setting was a "type" of baptism. This does not seem to be a "stretch" in reaching that conclusion. The context of Jesus' baptism teaches that it was performed "to fulfill all righteousness", Matt. 3:15. In light of this teaching, what scriptures expand this meaning in a more exhaustive manner, specifically to Jesus' baptism? All converts who are obedient to the gospel must understand that baptism is "unto the remission of sins", Acts 2:38, c.f. Acts 22:16, 1 Pet. 3:21, Rom. 6:1-5, Col. 2:12, Gal. 3:27, Mark 16:16, Matt. 28:18-20. As far as the water, itself, representing "anything", i.e "symbolizing", look at 1 Pet. 3:20-21.

Luke 3:21 " When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened [22] and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

Acts 2:38: "...Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

I'm certainly willing to be corrected here
    .
"My understanding is the Holy Spirit and the Word of God are one and the same." ERROR. Jesus is the Word!
    Please forgive me.

For Jesus to begin His ministry and preach the Word He had to have the Holy Spirit with Him. Jesus certainly was God the Son, but distinct from the Holy Spirit. So Jesus was baptized by John and recieved the Holy Spirit.

We too, recieve the Holy Spirit with baptism.

This is different than hearing and believing the Word of God before baptism.
It's a note of authority or credibility or sincerety in our voice when we teach, witness, or preach God's Word that's not natural to us.
Fledgling police and military officers have to learn "command". I don't mean yelling or bluster, but an elusive quality that demands attention, respect, and almost involuntary immediate compliance.
I don't think I'm explaining very well. Help!

    yours in Christ
