Four Types Of Worship
Here is an important truth that is hard for some people to hear: NOT ALL WORSHIP IS PLEASING TO GOD. Notice how the Bible proves this true:
- Cain: Genesis 4:5
- Nadab & Abihu: Leviticus 10:1-3
- The Corinthian Congregation: 1 Corinthians 11:17-22
In each of these examples we are shown that the worship that was offered was found by God to be unacceptable. What is not debated is that those involved worshiped. What is clear however, is that the worship they offered was not pleasing to God and was rejected. What is true of these individual in the past is also true for people today. The Bible teaches us that God does not leave us in the dark when it comes to what is acceptable and unacceptable in the area of worship.
I. Unacceptable Worship
A. Vain Worship
- Matthew 15:7-9
- Worship that is according to the traditions of man.
B. Will Worship
- Colossians 2:23 (KJV: will worship / NKJV: self imposed religion)
- What we want not what God has asked for
In In will worship we find: Instrumental music, choirs, praise teams, hand raising, hand clapping, dancing, divided assemblies, Lord’s supper monthly or quarterly or not at all, women leading the assembly, “worship that make me feel good!”
C. Ignorant Worship
- Acts 17:22-23
No knowledge, no understanding, no reasoning, not according to the pattern because the pattern is not known.
II. Acceptable Worship
A. Spirit & Truth Worship
- John 4:23-24
Spirit: attitude: reverence and awe: Heb. 12:28
Truth: according to God’s word: Jn. 17:17 / 2 Tim 1:13
- Done with “thus says the Lord” support: Colossians 3:17
- Done decently and in order: 1 Corinthians 14:40
Our goal as a people seeking to be please to God when it comes to our worship is to strive to be a people that worship in a way that is acceptable to God. To do this we MUST offer our worship as God had instructed not as we desire.
Are you worshiping God in an acceptable way? Is your worship Spirit & Truth worship?
