A rather interesting article appeared in one of the more liberal periodicals sometime back that, of late, has been parroted by the change agents of this new century. The author's comments serve as a good example of the present effort on the part of change agents to remodel and restructure the Lord's church of our generation into something that is “functional,” though not necessarily in accord with the “form” of the New Testament pattern. The author of that article draws a parallel between the progress in aviation and the supposed progress now being offered the brotherhood. He argues that our first attempts at flight failed because we sought to “imitate” the birds rather than develop the principle of flight. In like manner, he argues, we [those who would demand a 'thus saith the Lord'] have sought to imitate the first century church rather than build a church that is functional. He writes: “Like the ornithopterists of old, we assumed that 'function' was

Over the years, it has been my pleasure to worship with many brothers and sisters in many different locations in the United States. If I asked someone to visit these congregations and describe them to me in two words or less, there would no doubt be a great variety of descriptive terms. Some of these terms would likely be: Liberal, charismatic, institutional, non-institutional, fundamental, one-cupper, mainstream, non-cooperative, Holy Roller, legalistic, anti, instrumental, non-instrumental, conservative, contemporary, traditional, unorthodox, orthodox, normal, post-modern, and I am certain a number of other monikers I have not included. Certainly not all of these congregations are standing in the truth. God’s desire is that they all walk in truth for His Words will judge them in the final day (John 12:48).

Consider this in regard to labels: most people hate to be labeled by others. One reason is the desired label of an individual is quite often not the ...

“Moderates in the Church” by Jeff Grimes

Those of us who watch the cable news channels, or the network news broadcast often here the word “moderate” used. The political pundits are especially fond of labeling certain politicians as “moderate.” A moderate politician's speeches will be spoken in such a way as not to offend either those on the “right”, or those on the “left.” He never takes a stand on any particular issue; after all, he is seeking votes. He is interested in his approval rating. In South Alabama we would label him as a “fence-straddler.” Moderates and fence-straddlers in political circles are common.

It’s sad to say, but moderates and fence-straddlers in the Lord’s church are becoming more common with the passing of time. The Lord’s attitude toward moderates is seen in His letter to the church at Laodicea. “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold ...
